LAST-DAY DRAMA: HOW A NEIGHBOR SAVED ME FROM MISSING MY BUS FROM ÖLAND

Have you ever almost missed your bus home because of a last-minute schedule change you didn’t know existed? 🚌💨

It’s my final day visiting my parents in the picturesque village of Mörbylånga, on the southern Swedish island of Öland 🌾🏡. The trip has been everything I hoped for — sea breezes, cozy family meals, and a slower pace of life. But on the way out, it nearly became a much longer stay than planned.

🍽️ The Calm Before the Chaos
The day began with a lovely lunch at my parents’ house. Cousin Carina and her fiancé Åke joined us around the table. The conversation was lively, the food delicious — fresh bread, crisp salad, something warming in the pot. Laughter spilled through the kitchen windows and mingled with the autumn sunlight 🌞🍷.

⏳ The Twist
Then, in the middle of this domestic bliss, Carina mentioned I was taking a bus at four. That’s when her neighbor — who also happens to be a driver for Silverstrands — looked up and said, “The bus leaves at three.”
Apparently, the autumn schedule had just kicked in. Without this overheard detail, I’d have missed it entirely. Imagine me, stranded, dragging my suitcase back to my parents’ guest room.

🚍 The Dash
What followed was a quick scramble — goodbye hugs, last-minute packing, a mental inventory of everything I almost left behind. Within minutes I was at the stop, boarding the bus that would take me across the bridge and all the way back to Stockholm.

🏙️ Home Again

As much as I love Öland, there’s a particular comfort in returning to your own bed 🛏️🌙 — the familiar scent of home, the shape of your own pillow, the perfect ending to a trip that gave me both calm and comedy.

SOCK-STEALING DOG & SUNSET CONCERT: MY ÖLAND ADVENTURE

Have you ever been woken by a stranger in your home — only to discover it’s a dog with a taste for socks? 🧦🐕

This weekend, I’m back in Mörbylånga, on the stunning Swedish island of Öland 🌾, staying at my parents’ house. I wake to the sound of paws — my parents are dog-sitting for a friend, and this furry interloper has decided I’m his personal chew toy. Before I’ve even had coffee, my socks have vanished into canine oblivion.

🚤 Midday Escape
Cousin Carina and her fiancé Åke save the day. They pick me up and we drive to the docks at the harbor. The water glistens under the Swedish summer sun, daring us to swim. The air is fresh, salty, and invigorating — the kind of harbor atmosphere that makes you forget about sock theft entirely.

🍕 Sandbergen Stop
Next, we head to Sandbergen for pizza. While they enjoy their more traditional toppings, I, as a proud vegan 🌱, savor a pizza that’s fresh, colorful, and absolutely delicious. Proof that vegan travel in Sweden can be as indulgent as anywhere else.

🛒 Practical Interlude
A quick trip to the store for bread — because tomorrow’s bus ride demands sandwiches, and I am nothing if not a prepared traveler.

As the sun begins to set, we walk down to Sjöbacken, close to the shores of Kalmar Sound. There, in a garden, a concert begins. The music floats into the evening air, mingling with the scent of the sea. It’s warm at first, but as the sun dips lower, the chill creeps in — reminding us that even summer nights in Sweden carry a cool, romantic edge.

FROM GARDENING TO HARBOR SWIM: MY CHAOTIC ÖLAND WEEKEND

Have you ever been woken up by your mother, kidnapped into her garden before coffee, and somehow ended up at a windswept harbor before lunch? 🌿💦

This is exactly the sort of weekend that happens in Mörbylånga, on the Swedish island of Öland — and darling, it’s fabulous in its own chaotic way. From pulling weeds like a runway model pulling on opera gloves, to plunging into the harbor for a swim in water as warm as rumor but with a wind as sharp as fashion week critique, this is a small-town adventure you didn’t know you needed.

🌾 Morning: My mother insists we “just do a little gardening” — which, of course, turns into a full morning’s work before I’ve even tasted coffee. The weeds never stood a chance.

🌊 Midday: Off to the harbor for a swim! Warm water, wild wind, and a thrill you can only get when nature is fully in charge.

🍷 Afternoon: A pre-barbecue walk with my mother, sipping on a bottle of red wine called The Idiot (fabulous, by the way — full-bodied with a cheeky personality).

🔥 Evening: My cousin Carina and her fiancé Åke host a barbecue. I arrive with my signature Swedish pizza salad and garlic bread with tomato sauce. Guests include my dear old friend Nina and her girlfriend Sann.

What if nature knew how to accessorize? 🦓💦💁‍♂️🌈

I found this photo buried deep in my camera roll—the *very* first one on my iPhone—and I’m so glad I did. It's me, grinning in zebra stripes and oversized rainbow shades 🕶️, standing at the edge of an otherworldly turquoise pool 💙, smack in the middle of an abandoned limestone quarry in Grönhögen, Öland 🇸🇪. Taken on August 12, 2024, this accidental snapshot of summer magic is now one of my favorites.  

We stumbled across this surreal spot on the very *day* we were leaving the island, sweaty and sunburnt ☀️🥵, just hoping for a quick dip before the ferry. What we found was *this*: a human-made quarry filled with crystal-clear water, transformed by time into something mythic 🏝️. Think post-apocalyptic spa meets ancient Greek gods on vacation 💅🏼🧖‍♂️💦.  

Featuring: me, a black-and-white bathrobe that has seen better days, and a joyful, possibly sleep-deprived smile 😄. But really, the star here is the setting. Nature took something industrial and abandoned and turned it into a sapphire-blue secret 🌊🔮.  

This photo is more than just a vibe—it’s a reminder that beauty hides in the most unexpected places. That the best moments often happen at the very end of something ✨🚗. And that yes, you *can* pull off zebra print in a limestone quarry 🦓😉.  

We’ll absolutely be back. But until then—this photo lives here, waiting to inspire someone else to find their own weird, beautiful, unexpected place.

It was our final day on Öland, after visiting my parents, and this unexpected stop made the perfect ending. We were just heading home to Stockholm when we found this magical spot 🛻💫 Nature’s own infinity pool, carved from stone and filled with rain and time—who needs the beach when you can float in a green gem created by the planet itself? 🌍💚
