210724 ”A Little Dry, But Nothing Died…”


In this episode I water Ulf’s plants, edit a buttload of videos, get irritated with some people, make some cocktails and have a lovely time on the balcony, reading and enjoying an occasional frozé. 


THE PIMM’S SHORT

Ingredients 

50 ml Pimm's No. 1 

lemonade 50 ml  

1 piece of orange peel 


Instructions 

Ice cubes should be placed in a short glass or tumbler. Combine Pimm's No. 1 with lemonade in a pitcher. Stir. Serve with orange peel as a garnish.

210731 THE BIG PROHIBITION COCKTAIL COUNTDOWN No 5 MARY PICKFORD


Mary Pickford was a silent era Movie Star, most poplar during 1910s and 1020s. She was born 1892 in Canada


Prohibition in America was from 1920 to 1933.


Mary Pickford, her husband Douglas Fairbanks, and Chaplin were in Havana sometime in the 1920’s when a bartender whipped up this tropical concoction and named it in her honor.


The Cocktail glass - Invented in the late 19th century, and its form derives from the fact that all cocktails are traditionally served chilled and contain an aromatic element. 


Thus, the stem allows the drinker to hold the glass without affecting the temperature of the drink, an important aspect due to the lack of added ice which in other drinks serves to cool the drink, and the wide bowl places the surface of the drink directly under the drinker's nose, ensuring the aromatic element has the desired effect. 


Despite a popular story that says the martini glass was invented during Prohibition  introduced in the 1925 Paris Exhibition as a modernist take on the Champagne coupe,[6] and wasn't originally used as it is today: in films of the 1920s it is shown to be used to hold champagne, like the coupe.

0.5 cl Grenadine is non alcoholic and subject to minimal regulation. Name comes from french Grenade which means Pomegranate- Pomegranate syrup found in most Middle Eastern groceries is made with pomegranate concentrate and sugar, and is as an authentic grenadine.


0.75 cl Maraschino is a liqueur made from Marsha Cherries in Croatia.

210723 ”We Thought We’d Call This Area G L A M ”


In this episode I meet Martin in Örnsberg, at his boatclub, for lunch and a swim, and then I help him tidy up and organize his boat and he also, involuntarily, gets his drag name. Then I bike to Systembolaget, the government run liquor store, where I buy Pimm’s, Tequila and Rosé. And back home I mix a classic Pimm’s and Lemonade, and while I take a long, hot bubble bath, I have a Frozé.


Frozé:

Ingredients:

375 ml rosé wine

1/2 cup syrup

1/2 dl vodka

3 tablespoons juice from fresh lime


Do this:

Freeze the rosé wine in ice cubes. It is also possible to pour directly into a zip-lock bag (1l.) Which you freeze in a sorbet.

2. Mix the ice cubes of rosé wine in a blender together with the syrup, lime juice and vodka.

Serve in beautiful glasses. 


RECIPE FOR CLASSIC PIMM'S AND LEMONADE 


Ingredients: 

Ice to fill the jug 

200 mL Pimm's No 1 

600 mL chilled carbonated lemonade 

1 sprig mint leaves 

1 small cucumber, sliced 

1 medium orange, cut 

1/2 cup hulled and halved strawberries

The cocktail is actually named after a rather intimidating gun that was used by the French during WWI – a fun fact to impress your friends with at your next cocktail party!


It’s a Tom Colins with champagne instead of carbonated water.


French 75 is a cocktail made from gin, Champagne, lemon juice, and sugar. It is also called a 75 Cocktail, or in French simply a Soixante Quinze (Seventy Five).


The drink dates to World War I, and an early form was created in 1915 at the New York Bar in Paris—later Harry's New York Bar—by barman Harry MacElhone. The combination was said to have such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm field gun.


3 cl gin

2 dashes simple syrup

1.5 cl lemon juice

6 cl Champagne


Combine gin, syrup, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled champagne glass. Top up with Champagne. Stir gently.


The French 75 was popularized in America at the Stork Club in New York. It appears in the movie Casablanca (1942) and is referenced twice in the John Wayne films A Man Betrayed (1941) and Jet Pilot (1957). In 2016, it appears in the ITV series, Mr. Selfridge, which is set in London in the 1910s and 1920s.
