What if…Understudy Moments Could Be Anywhere?

This photo, the oldest on my iPhone, was taken on November 24, 2023, during an understudy run-through at the theatre. Here’s Tord Hansson, standing in for the role of Ragnar, the village lawyer. This role has its own particular look, with the same iconic tie and jacket shared by both Tord and the original actor. Tord has since left our production to be closer to his family, and his absence is definitely felt. He brought such warmth and a unique energy to the role and to our cast.

I initially took this photo to experiment with AI filters that can transform rooms and backgrounds, reshaping this classic theatre space in wild ways. I was curious to see what a filter could do to the room—a touch of Greek temple here, a Harry Potter-esque ambiance there, even a Gauguin-inspired space! There’s a filter with African-inspired decor, and one that’s entirely pink. Each version reimagines the backstage area in a unique style.

But, as with any AI, it has its quirks. It tends to struggle with features, misplacing hands, giving extra toes, or adding limbs that don’t belong! Sometimes the eyes or smile come out hilariously wrong, and yet it all adds a strange kind of charm. I think it captures both the nostalgia of having this last picture of Tord in costume and the playful possibilities of AI.

It’s moments like these that remind me of the little joys we find in the daily routines of theatre life and how even digital edits can create unexpected memories. Swipe to see the other versions—each transformation, glitch and all!
