Starting the day off on my bike! Exactly like yesterday, I meet up with my friend Magnus at Storkyrkan in Gamla Stan, Stockholm. I arrive ten minutes early, and when Magnus joins, we pay our admission and enter the church. We get a fantastic guide named Pyret, who is one of the best we've ever had. Fun fact: Our King and Queen got married in this church!
Storkyrkan, also known as Stockholm Cathedral or the Great Church, is a significant landmark in Gamla Stan, the old town of Stockholm. Officially named St. Nicholas Church, it dates back to the 13th century, making it one of the city's oldest buildings.
The cathedral's Gothic and Baroque architectural styles reflect its long and storied history. Storkyrkan has been the site of numerous important events, including royal weddings and coronations. One of its most famous features is the wooden statue of St. George and the Dragon, created in the 15th century by Bernt Notke. This impressive sculpture symbolizes Sweden's struggle for freedom and is a masterpiece of medieval art.
Another notable piece is the Vädersoltavlan, a 16th-century painting depicting a sun dog phenomenon that occurred over Stockholm in 1535. This painting is the oldest known image of Stockholm and holds great historical significance.
Storkyrkan's interior is equally magnificent, with stunning stained glass windows, intricate wooden carvings, and a grand pipe organ. It remains an active place of worship and a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into Sweden's rich cultural and religious heritage. Located near the Royal Palace, Storkyrkan is an essential stop for anyone exploring the heart of Stockholm.
